Illegally parked heavy vehicles hold up traffic on highway
PANVEL: Scores of illegally parked containers along the Mumbai- Goa highway on the stretch between Palaspe phata and Shirdhone have been causing major traffic snarls in the area. What makes matters worse is the absence of the New Panvel traffic personnel.
The part of the highway, starting at Palaspe phata, has been witnessing congestion every day. Besides this, heavy vehicles such as containers also ply on the highway which is undergoing road widening work up to Shirdhone.
Fur t her, t he number of godowns near the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust ( JNPT) in Panvel and Uran are also increasing with every passing day, only worsening the traffic jams on the national highway.
The containers t hat are parked along the highway for loading and unloading of goods at godowns also end up waiting there for long since it is a time taking process.
This has often led to accidents on the highway as motorists heading to Mumbai or Goa at night fail to spot the heavy vehicles parked along the highway and collide with them.
Pedestrians are also inconvenienced by these heavy vehicles parked along the highway.
Dilip Gore, assistant police commissioner, said “We have initiated action on vehicles parked illegally along National highway 4B and the Panvel bypass that starts from Kalamboli circle and ends at Palaspe.”
Many motorists travelling at night fail to see the containers parked on the Mumbai-Goa highway, causing accidents.
