PMC’s bus service a reality soon?
PANVEL: The Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has stepped up efforts to launch bus services in the city under Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns ( UIDSSMT).
UIDSSMT is one of the components of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission ( JNNURM) initiated by the central government to promote public transport facili- ties and curb traffic congestion.
The PMC had prepared a proposal to this effect, which has been approved at a special meeting. The civic body will now send this proposal to the state government, which will in turn send it to the central government for its nod.
According to the PMC proposal, plot numbers 508 and 520 admeasuring 15 acres have been reserved for a bus depot. A bus terminal will be built at Karanjade. Around 30 bus routes have been identified in the proposal, with the shortest bus route being 4km and longest 52.7km.
The civic body has also has also proposed setting up an independent committee to prepare and monitor parking policies.
Residents of New Panvel, Kalamboli, Kamothe and Kharghar near Panvel city have long been demanding a bus service, which is sorely lacking in the locality, as they are routinely fleeced by auto drivers.
