NAVI MUMBAI: The chill in the air has brought with it a number of ailments. According to doctors in the city, there has been a 30- 40% rise in cases of viral infection, influenza, respiratory tract and gastrointestinal infections in the last fortnight. They attributed it to the fluctuating temperature.

“The human body needs time to adapt to the changing environment. This is when the immunity of the body weakens and people fall prey to infections,” said Dr Radha Subramanian, a Vashibased physician.

With the dip in temperatures, there has been a rise in cases of colds, sore throats, coughs and influenza. Further, more people are complaining of chest congestion, dry and itchy skin, a runny nose, sinusitis and seasonal allergies. People suffering from conditions like asthma, rheumatism and arthritis, too, have a difficult time in this weather.

“The changing weather and low sunlight makes it conducive for the viruses to breed. People often get confused between influenza and a cold. But it is important that influenza patients get a vaccination ” said Dr Farah Ingle, general physician, Fortis Hospital, Vashi.

Ingle said on an average she treats about 60 to 70 patients a weak, of which of which at least 40 people have the same complaints.

“People who suffer from allergies also have a difficult time during this period. These allergies also tend to last longer because most people prefer staying indoors when the temperatures are lower,” she said.

Doctors said it was important to seek medical attention and to avoid self-medication. “A good diet comprising milk and dairy products is also a must. In addition vitamin C, iron and vitamin A must be consumed to fight winter ailments. Keep your food light and healthy,” said Varsha Ghorpade, a Nerul-based dietician Stay active: Walking is not sufficient; it targets the feet, ankles and legs, not your hips, spine, shoulders and wrists.
