‘Low bone density among residents a rising concern’

-

NAVI MUMBAI: The number of osteoporosis patients in the city are on the rise, said doctors.

“About 71% of Indians suffer from osteoporosis, as per the estimates of the National Osteoporosis Foundation,” said orthopaedic surgeon Rajesh Badiyani.

Bone diseases are common among women, but there has been a rise in the number of men affected as well. “For women, there is a gradually progressive bone loss from the mid-30s, which accelerates during menopause,” said Badiyani.

Sai Snehdeep hospital, Kopar Khairane has organised a free bone density check-up on December 1, as part of an orthopaedic wellness drive. The camp will include free blood sugar check-ups, physiotherapy consultation and orthopaedic consultations between 10am and 2pm.

A bone mineral density check-up measures the density of minerals (such as calcium) using a special X-ray or computed tomography CT scan. This is used to estimate the strength of the bones.

Incidentally, the symptoms of osteoporosis are present in the body long before they are evident. Awareness comes when the bones become fragile. To prevent this, doctors advise a routine bone density check-up after the age of 35
