SANPADA: The Navi Mumbai unit of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on Thursday held a morcha against Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) that has allegedly failed to supply cooking gas to hundreds of customers who have paid up for the pipeline connection.

Led by BJP general secretary Santosh Pachlag, vice president Sunil Honrao, women’s wing general secretary Anuradha Sutar and other office bearers of the party, the morcha was held at the party’s office in Sanpada.

According to Pachlag, MGL had entered Navi Mumbai in 2008 and promised to begin the supply of cooking gas through pipelines by 2010. “Almost 50,000 residents have paid Rs 500 each as initial deposit for the supply until now but it hasn’t begun in any case,” he said, adding that the pipelines have been laid in several parts of the city.

Following the morcha, MGL officials told the BJP delegation that it would take a year to begin the gas supply to the said connections. The delegation, however, is not pleased and says it demands prompt action.

“We want it to be done earlier or BJP will launch an agitation on the issue,” informed Honrao. “A lot of women in the city are working and hence can’t keep track of the gas cylinders that come to their houses. Besides, with the removal of subsidy, gas cylinders have become costlier. That is why MGL was preferred by the residents,” he added.

When contacted, MGL deputy manager Anil Tikku said, “We are doing our best to ensure early gas supply to every household and the process is on. But it will be difficult to specify the time frame ”
