Officers reject 27 nomination­s, 887 candidates in the poll fray

CBD BELAPUR: Twenty-seven out of 914 candidates who had filed nomination papers for NMMC elections have been rejected by returning officers on Wednesday after scrutiny of their nomination papers.

So, 887 candidates will contest for 111 seats in the NMMC.

Of the 27 candidates, nomination­s of several dummy candidates from the Congress, Shiv Sena and t he BJP, a woman candidate f rom the NCP and Independen­t candidates were cancelled by returning officers.

The nomination papers of NCP’s JD Sutar, Shiv Sena’s Sunita Mandve and BJP’s Kashinath Patil who filed nomination­s as back- up can- didates were rejected after scrutiny.

The nomination paper of NCP candidate from ward 36 Ruksar Jameer Qureshi, who has three children, was cancelled by the returning officer.

In Nerul’s ward number 90, three NCP candidates filed nomination papers but one was finalised later.

The NCP decided to field Ruchita Karpe from the ward. After objection from several senior NCP leaders over her candidatur­e, it announced the candidatur­e of Javeri Bansilal.

Despite objection of opposition candidates, the nomination papers of NCP candidates Suresh Kulkarni from Turbhe store and Keshav Mhatre from Kopar Khairane were declared valid.

The last date of withdrawal of nomination­s is April 10. Hence senior party leaders are making efforts to pacify the rebels.

Several rebels are not likely to withdraw their nomination­s. In ward 107, Ganesh Narayan Naik, a resident of Karave village who rebelled against Sena filed nomination papers as an Independen­t candidate.

Naik, who j oined Sena a month ago, rebelled against the party after the ward went to BJP after seat-sharing pact.
