Robbers attack cop, snatch gun
Assistant police inspector stops the six travelling in cab but was overpowered by them
NERUL: It was a high- speed car chase at Nerul on Friday with an assistant police inspector hot on the heels of suspected robbers.
It ended in an attack on the cop and his service revolver being snatched by the armed robbers.
At 4am, assistant police inspector of Nerul police station Jagavendra Singh Rajput Rajput was patrolling on his two- wheeler when he spotted a taxi carrying six people moving around suspiciously in Nerul.
“He chased the cab for a few metres and then parked his vehicle in front of the taxi at Sant Basaweshar Chowk, forcing it to stop. Rajput noticed that tools used in robbery, including an iron rod and a sword, were kept in the taxi. There were around six people sitting in the cab,” said Sangeeta Alphonso Shinde, senior police inspector of Nerul police station.
Forty- five- year- old Rajput started questioning the six.
“The police officer then took away key of the vehicle,” said Shinde.
As he was questioning them about the weapon and tool, one of the six attacked him from behind with a knife. Rajput was over powered and was pinned to the ground. One of them snatched Rajput’s service revolver.
The six managed to take the taxi key from him.
“But, the entire commotion had alerted the people nearby and those on the road. As the people rushed to the spot, the six fled leaving the taxi behind,” said Shinde.
The police officer was taken to MGM Hospital in Vashi where he is undergoing treatment.
Rajput has sustained serious injuries on his hand, stomach and head.
“His condition is stated to be stable. We have seized the robbers’ car, which has a sticker of the MNS. Further investigation is going on,” she added.
