Po­lice ar­rest three, res­cue 16 girls from two flats in Vashi

VASHI: The city po­lice have res­cued 16 girls, who were forced into pros­ti­tu­tion, from two flats at Juhugaon in Vashi on Wed­nes­day evening.

Three peo­ple, iden­ti­fied as Vinod Prasad, 19, Shambhu Jad­hav, 19, and Di­nesh Das, 28, who were al­legedly run­ning the pros­ti­tu­tion racket for the past sev­eral months, have also been ar­rested, said the po­lice.

Vol­un­teers of Trans­form­ing Life Foun­da­tion, an NGO, had in­formed the Vashi po­lice about the racket.

“We sent two of our of­fi­cers pos­ing as cus­tomers to ver­ify the de­tails we re­ceived from the NGO. Af­ter get­ting con­firmed re­ports, we raided the flats and made the ar­rests,” said po­lice in­spec­tor ( crime) Su­raj Padvi of Vashi po­lice sta­tion.

“The res­cued girls are na­tives of West Ben­gal and Jharkhand. None of t hem are mi­nors. We have sent them for med­i­cal tests to the NMMC hos­pi­tal,” he said.

Ac­cord­ing t o Padvi, t he ac­cused would al­legedly send the girls to the lo­ca­tion their cus­tomers would ask them to.

The po­lice have booked the ac­cused un­der sec­tions 4 and 5 of Pre­ven­tion of Immoral Traf­fick­ing Act, 1956. They were pro­duced be­fore the ju­di­cial court on Thurs­day.
