Police arrest three, rescue 16 girls from two flats in Vashi
VASHI: The city police have rescued 16 girls, who were forced into prostitution, from two flats at Juhugaon in Vashi on Wednesday evening.
Three people, identified as Vinod Prasad, 19, Shambhu Jadhav, 19, and Dinesh Das, 28, who were allegedly running the prostitution racket for the past several months, have also been arrested, said the police.
Volunteers of Transforming Life Foundation, an NGO, had informed the Vashi police about the racket.
“We sent two of our officers posing as customers to verify the details we received from the NGO. After getting confirmed reports, we raided the flats and made the arrests,” said police inspector ( crime) Suraj Padvi of Vashi police station.
“The rescued girls are natives of West Bengal and Jharkhand. None of t hem are minors. We have sent them for medical tests to the NMMC hospital,” he said.
According t o Padvi, t he accused would allegedly send the girls to the location their customers would ask them to.
The police have booked the accused under sections 4 and 5 of Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act, 1956. They were produced before the judicial court on Thursday.
