A 12-year-old stu­dent of New Hori­zon Public School at New Pan­vel (left) died on Fe­bru­ary 24 af­ter fall­ing off the fourth floor of his school build­ing

Ac­cord­ing to the po­lice, the Class 6 stu­dent jumped off the bal­cony af­ter a teacher slapped him.

In­stead of com­pletely cov­er­ing gallery on each floor with grills, the New Pan­vel school has al­legedly in­stalled one-and-a-half feet long grill along the gallery.

As per the norm, schools need to put in place a first-aid box, am­bu­lance, grill in win­dows and doors, fire-fight­ing sys­tem, drink­ing wa­ter fa­cil­ity, toi­lets, CCTV cam­eras. The schools also need to carry out a struc­tural au­dit of the build­ing ev­ery year.

Scores of schools have been re­ported to have flouted the safety norm.

Par­ents have de­manded ac­tion against schools flout­ing safety and se­cu­rity norms per­tain­ing to stu­dents.

School rep­re­sen­ta­tives have said that they are tak­ing fur­ther mea­sures to en­sure the safety of the school­child­ren.
