A 12-year-old student of New Horizon Public School at New Panvel (left) died on February 24 after falling off the fourth floor of his school building
According to the police, the Class 6 student jumped off the balcony after a teacher slapped him.
Instead of completely covering gallery on each floor with grills, the New Panvel school has allegedly installed one-and-a-half feet long grill along the gallery.
As per the norm, schools need to put in place a first-aid box, ambulance, grill in windows and doors, fire-fighting system, drinking water facility, toilets, CCTV cameras. The schools also need to carry out a structural audit of the building every year.
Scores of schools have been reported to have flouted the safety norm.
Parents have demanded action against schools flouting safety and security norms pertaining to students.
School representatives have said that they are taking further measures to ensure the safety of the schoolchildren.
