KHARGHAR: Some unidentified people broke into three flats in the same building and another flat in the adjacent building at Kharghar and stole goods collectively worth Rs7.63 lakh in less than four hours on Tuesday, the police said.

According to the police, the residents of the burgled flats in Aristo building and Morach building at Sector 27, were out with their families between 9.30am and 1.30pm, when the culprits broke in and fled with the cash and jewellery.

“None of the buildings had CCTV cameras on their premises. They had security guards, who claimed they had not seen anyone entering the buildings,” said SP Shewale, assistant police inspector of Kharghar police station.

When asked about the possibility of the security guards being involved in the theft, Shewale said, “We are not suspecting their involvement as of now. Our investigations are on and we hope to solve the case soon.”

The police have registered a case under sections 454 and 380 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the unidentified culprits.

“It is sad that residents do not show interest in awareness drives conducted by the police against house break- ins and other crimes. They hardly follow the precautionary measures mentioned in the notices put up by the police in various parts of the city. There will be a considerable decline in burglary cases if they even read and follow the safety measures mentioned in such notices,” said a crime branch requesting anonymity.
