2 killed in pile-up after tempo loses control on expressway
NAVI MUMBAI: A pile-up of vehicles on the Mumbai-Pune expressway led to the death of two people and injured at least 4 on Wednesday afternoon.
The injured have been admitted to hospitals in Panvel.
The accident occurred near Khopoli in Dheku village area before the Khalapur toll naka, around 4.30 pm.
According to a local police official, “A tempo (MH04 CU4240) heading from Pune to Mumbai had a brake failure which led to the driver losing control of the vehicle.”
“The tempo then hit at least seven vehicles before coming to a halt,” said the official.
Several vehicles were badly damaged in the accident.
One of the dead has been identified as Bharat Kiratkude. He was declared dead on arrival at Panacea hospital in Pune.
Two other injured at the hospital, reportedly residents of Thane are said to be in a critical state.
The injured include Parag Shah, 40, who has suffered head injury and Rajesh Bolkawde, who has fractured his limbs.
Dr Surendra Rathod, who is treating the injured, said, “Their condition is serious. Shah is on ventilator as he is having difficulty in breathing. Bolkawde has multiple fractures on his right upper and lower limbs from where he was hit.”
The accident led to traffic snarl on the road for a couple of hours due to the pile-up. Motorists taking the wrong lane further worsened the situation.
