MUMBAI: A 58-year-old woman was found brutally murdered in her Dadar flat on Wednesday afternoon. The police suspect the woman, who lived alone, was killed by a worker, as her house was being renovated. The society has no CCTV cameras installed.

The police said Beleza Cardozo was found in a pool of blood by her house-help, Mangal Surve, around noon in the second floor flat of the Luis Court Co-Operative Housing Society near MTNL building. The Cardozos own two flats on the second floor, which were being renovated into a single flat.

“Surve opened the door to the house to find Cardozo lying on the sofa with a head injury,” said Mahesh Patil, deputy commissioner of police, Zone 5. Surve began screaming, alerting the neighbours. “They rushed her to Hinduja Hospital, but she was declared dead on arrival,” he said.

The police suspect robbery could have been the motive, and have seized the murder weapon, a trowel, that was lying next to the victim. Cardozo was last seen by a neighbour at 10.30pm on Tuesday night, when she had stepped out of her flat to feed cats and dogs in the society, as was her daily routine.

There are no close circuit television cameras in the society; a watchman is employed on the night shift, between 8pm and 9am. The watchman’s cabin is at the entrance to her building.
