Almost 18 months after a 23-year-old woman was found strangulated at her Kalyan (East) house, the police arrested the accused from Bangalore.

The arrested accused, Dilip Rai, 38, and the woman Soni Sarkar used to work in a hotel at Kalyan.

Sarkar and Rai fell in love and got married. They lived at Ganesh Nagar in Kalyan (East). “Later, Sarkar fell in love with another man named Sashi. She left Rai and got married to Shashi. The couple started living near Rai’s house. On May 1 last year, Rai went to Sarkar’s house and told her to shift to another area. He said he had no problems with she leaving him but was uncomfortable that she was staying nearby,” said a police officer from Kolshewadi police station.

An argument followed. Rai strangulated her with a rope and killed her on May 4. “We had no clue about the accused. With help of our sources, we found that he was working as a manager at a construction site in Bangalore. We formed a team and sent our officers to Bangalore and arrested him. He was brought to the city on Saturday,” said Shailendra Nagarkar, senior police inspector, Kalyan crime branch.

The Kalyan crime branch officers along with Kolshewadi police have solved the murder case after almost 18 months. “The accused has confessed to the crime and will be produced in Kalyan court on Sunday,” added Nagarkar.
