State to regulate fertility clinics, fix age limit for donors
Women who wish to be surrogate mothers and egg donors in Maharashtra may soon have to seek permission from close relatives.
The government move, which has been criticised by fertility experts, includes plans to fix an age limit for donors.
The planned rules are similar to those that cover kidney or liver donations and come in the wake of allegations that women are exploited by the Indian infertility clinic industry, which generates an annual business of Rs2,500 crore, according to an estimate by the Union government.
