NAVI MUMBAI: Three members of gang, who used to cheat people with fake currency notes, have been arrested by the Navi Mumbai crime branch.

According to the police, the suspects used to tell the prospective victims that they had some foreign currency notes with them and that they were interested to exchange those with Indian currency of lower face value as they needed money urgently.

Later, they cheated the victims by giving bundles of papers cut to the size of the actual notes. In the latest incident, they robbed one man of Rs2 lakh on February 2.

The arrested men have been identified as Jamal Khan, 32, a resident of Kalamboli, Ibrahim Mandal, 35, and Jahrul Tarafdar, 25, both residents of Kalyan. All of them are from West Bengal.

“We had been searching for the gang for the past several weeks and finally arrested these three members near Kopar Khairane railway station on Monday. We have recovered 20 US dollars and 100 Saudi riyals and Rs1 lakh from them,” said a police officer.

“The accused have confessed to committing some crimes. We are now searching for other members of the gang,” the officer said.
