SANPADA: The NMMC has identified a plot at Sector 8, reserved for a garden as Hutatma Babu Genu ground.

However, due to the negligence of the civic body, it has become an illegal parking ground.

Locals claim that area has also been encroached upon by Sanpada police station chowkie and also a temple, with the civic body reportedly turning a blind eye to the encroachments.

Cidco has reserved 6,241 sqm plot in sector 8 of Sanpada for a garden. It was transferred to NMMC in 2007.

The NMMC, however, reserved it as a ground.

No permission was taken from the government for converting the garden plot into a ground.

Half the plot area is used by some residents to park vehicles. A temple has been constructed near the entrance of the ground. No permission was taken during the construction of the temple either.

There is encroachment by Sanpada police station too. A makeshift chowkie has been constructed. Vehicles involved in accidents or seized by the police are parked on the plot. There is also a tea stall in a corner of the plot.

A local resident said, “While action is immediately taken against the project-affected people who construct need- based houses, nothing is done when land for public use is encroached in such a manner.”

He added, “It is the responsibility of the civic body and also the police to ensure that no encroachment takes place in public places. However, nobody seems to care here.”

Local corporator Richa Patil said, “I had enquired with the NMMC administration and they had confirmed that the plot is for a garden and not a ground. They had also accepted in writing that it has been encroached upon.”

She added, “I am following up on the issue. The administration should take immediate action in the matter.”
