Man held for abetting wife’s suicide
NAVI MUMBAI: The New Panvel police have arrested a 33-year-old man after his wife committed suicide by setting herself on fire on Thursday. His in-laws allege that he used to abuse and assault his wife, because of which she took the step.
According to t he police, Harshuram Mhatre and Jyotshna, 30, tied the knot in 2007 and lived at Sai village in Panvel. They have a six-year-old son and a four-year-old daughter.
“Mhatre used to come home drunk and assault his wife over minor issues,” said a police officer from New Panvel police station.
Jyotshna used to call her brothers and tell them her plight.
“On Wednesday morning too, the couple fought over some family issues. Following a heated argument, Mhatre assaulted his wife and then went out of the house. She poured kerosene on her and then set herself on fire,” he said.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital by some neighbours, but she died after sometime. According to the doctors, she suffered 95% burns.
Following a first information report (FIR) registered by Jyotshna’s family, the police arrested Mhatre on Thursday. He does various odd jobs to earn his livelihood.
He has been remanded in police custody.
