Panvel may get civic corporation by next month
The process of establishment of the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) is picking up pace.
The final meeting of the study committee formed for the establishment of the corporation is to be held on April 11. Sources say that if the final report of the committee is submitted soon, there could be an official announcement by the state government on the establishment of the municipal corporation, likely by Maharashtra Day which is on May 1.
PMC CEO Mangesh Chitale said, “The study committee has so far held four meetings. The next meeting will be held on April 11. The final report will be submitted to the state government.”
The proposed PMC is expected to include 66 of the 173 villages in Panvel taluka, eight Cidcodeveloped nodes and Panvel city. The state government had formed a committee headed by Konkan divisional commissioner, Tanaji Satre, to prepare a plan for the establishment of the proposed corporation.
The committee is studying how the corporation should be, its geographical boundaries, financial sources and expenses on basic amenities and infrastructure.
According to the draft report of the committee, the population has reached 8 lakh. As per the population criteria, the corporation could be categorised as a D-category civic body. Efforts are on at the administration level, for the corporation to be a C-category civic body based on certain technical issues.
