Panvel rivers to be cleaned, beautifi ed
PANVEL: The revenue department has taken up the ambitious project of beautifying and cleaning rivers in Panvel. The project was inaugurated on Gudi Padwa through a puja on the banks of Gadhi river in Takka.
The riverbeds of Gadhi, Kalundre and Kasadi rivers that pass through Panvel have become polluted. There are also large-scale encroachments along the river.
It was in this context that the cleaning and beautification work was decided upon.
MLA Prashant Thakur said: “There is a need for all sections of the society to unite in this endeavour. Social and nature loving organisations and NSS students need to participate and support the project.”
Tehsildar Deepak Akde said, “A meeting will be held on April 21, which will be attended by officials of all departments. A plan will be charted out at the meeting to implement the project.”
Akde rendered an oath to those present conveying social message on water literacy.
Akde said, “We have taken up the beautification and cleanliness programme of Gadhi river to ensure that it does not end up like Mumbai’s Mithi river is in.”
He added, “T he project will prove to be a boon for the residents of Panvel. Wherever required strict action will be taken if there are obstacles in the project in terms of beautification.”
THE RIVERBEDS OF GADHI, KALUNDRE AND KASADI HAVE BECOME POLLUTED. THERE ARE ALSO ENCROACHMENTS ALONG THE RIVER.
