Assamese to ring in new year

As Assamese across the country celebrate Rongali Bihu, a host of programmes have been scheduled for members of the Assamese community in Navi Mumbai.

“Rongali Bihu being celebrated by Assamese in different parts of the country is not just a festival, it is the lifeline of Assamese culture. Starting Wednesday, we have scheduled week-long celebrations. Every single day of the celebrations will highlight different aspects of the culture, varied rituals and their significance,” said Kharghar resident Binod Mudiar, who is also the president of Assam Association, Mumbai.

Those in Navi Mumbai will celebrate the festival by organising cultural functions, games and community get-togethers Kharghar, Panvel and Vashi, among other areas. While Bihu dance and song programmes are also being held, artistes from Assam have also been invited to mesmerise the audience with their performances.

“Rongali Bihu marks the coming of spring and the beginning of the new Assamese calendar that starts with the month of Bohag. That is why, this festival is also known as Bohag Bihu. It has been celebrated since pre-Aryan days. The festival has seen a lot of changes in terms of celebration in recent times. The touch of urban sophistication is there, but we try to retain our culture and tradition,” said Mudiar.

Unlike a majority of Indian festivals that have religious signifi- cance, the festival of Rongali Bihu is more secular as people from all backgrounds, irrespective of their caste, creed and religion join in the celebrations.

Deepankar Borgohain, general secretary, Assam Association, said, “This year, the main function will be held at Goregaon on Saturday.”

Borgohain said, “Those in Colaba and Mira Road will also be celebrating the festival.”
