KALYAN: Four years after the Govindwadi bypass work was started, the Kalyan- Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has set a May deadline for its completion.

Once completed, the road will ease traffic congestion in Kalyan which has worsened since the work started in 2011.

The civic body said it would complete the project by May and open it to the public.

“After the major demolition work in January, we have sped up work to complete the entire stretch. It is expected to be completed by May,” said E Ravendiran, KDMC commissioner.

However, this is not the first deadline set by the civic body for the project. Every year, it sets a deadline before monsoon but fails to meet it.

“This time we have removed the hurdles that cause the delay in the project,” added Ravendiran.

Four cow stables on the 1.6 km bypass was a hurdle to the project as the owner refused to shift. After a long legal tussle, the stable owner moved out after he was given rehabilitation.

On January 1, four cow stables along with several other structures where workers lived were demolished, paving the way for the project. The civic body demolished around 25 structures on the stretch.

The Govindwadi bypass project was started in 2011 by the Maharashtra State Road Development Cor poration (MSRDC) however it could not complete the work for entire stretch due to the cow stable mat- ter. The civic body had failed to remove the cow stable since the project started and this delayed the project. The work for 200 metres out of the 1.6 km stretch which was pending is under progress.

“The bypass project would have been completed long back if the civic body could have removed the structures on time. It got removed recently and we are working on the project now in full swing,” said an MSRDC official, requesting anonymity.

This bypass road is a diversion road starting from Patri Pool and connecting to Durgadi Bridge in Kalyan (West).
