Uproar over formation of PMC

The general body meeting of Raigad zilla parishad earlier this week witnessed uproarious scenes over the formation of the proposed Panvel municipal corporatio­n (PMC).

The BJP pressed for the formation of PMC while some members of Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) vehemently opposed the process.

Finally, ZP president Suresh Tokre ordered the administra­tion to write to the state government to give importance to the resolution passed by the ZP general body meeting on the formation of PMC before taking any decision.

At the meeting held on Wedneday, deputy chief executive officer (gram panchayat) began the proceeding­s by reading the agenda, on which the first item was the PMC.

While deputy president Arvind Mhatre opposed the formation of PMC, another member Rajendra Patil objected to the opposition.

“PMC will bring developmen­t to the rural areas of Raigad. The formation of PMC will lead to increase in revenue,” said Patil,

“The government has already taken a decision. Now asking the gram sabha and gram panchayats to pass resolution seem to be ‘time pass’ tactics by the government, a mere formality,” said PWP member Aswad Patil.

“The gram panchayats come under ZP jurisdicti­on. Hence the decision of the general body meeting of ZP too should be taken into account by the government. The administra­tion should take up the issue with the government,” he said.
