THANE: Cutting down on his household expenses, a 32-yearold Physics teacher from Lokmanya Nagar, Thane has started using that money for an ambulance service to drop poor people to hospitals free of charge.

Singh, a resident of Thane, has been surviving on his savings as his classes were closed for the last one year.

After seeing a man taking his mother to a hospital on a handcart, he decided to start this service in April to help poor people in the neighbourhood. People who don’t have breathing issues can call him for his services.

Singh said “I was stunned by the high rates for ambulance services and saw this man taking his mother in a handcart. I decided to cut down on my daily expenses for groceries to just rice and dal and use my savings to start an ambulance service. I have a Wagon R car in which I have created a partition and also have a PPE kit. I circulated my number on social media so that people could get help.

“So far, I have provided service to more than 55 patients. For this service, I left my house and started living alone as my family members should not face any issue. I have kept money to help people in the predicted third wave.”

A fruit vendor, Sunil Kumar Gupta, 28, said, “My pregnant wife tested positive in April. She became so weak that it was really difficult to take her to the hospital for treatment. One of my neighbours approached Sunil sir, who immediately brought his car to my house and helped us till she got a bed in the hospital. Now, she has completely recovered.”
