Batters fail to get going as Mumbai lose to Railways by four wickets

MUMBAI: Mumbai batters failed to get going as the in-form team went down to Railways by four wickets in their Elite Group A match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Rajkot on Thursday.

Batting first, Mumbai were bundled out for 107 in their 20 overs, with only No 8 Shivam Dube (29 not out) and No 10 Tanush Kotian (28) crossing the 20-run mark. Opener Prithvi Shaw, who has been in sizzling form, was bowled by Yuvraj Singh for a 5-ball 10 while captain Ajinkya Rahane too was cleaned up by the same bowler for 12. Shreyas Iyer could not find his rhythm before he as dismissed for 8 off 12 balls.

Tottering at 52 for eight, the 40-run partnershi­p between Dube and Kotian ensured Mumbai got to the three-figure mark.

In response, Railways got home with five balls and four wickets to spare, with opener Shivam Chaudhary top-scoring with a 38-ball 40. Tushar Deshpande, Shams Mulani and Kotian picked up two wickets apiece for Mumbai.

Vedika records three successive victories

Vedika Jaiswal won all her three girls’ U-11 Group C matches in the JVPG-TSTTA District Table Tennis Championsh­ip at the Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana Club.

In the opening group match, Vedika defeated Pranshi Upadhyay 11-8, 11-8, 11-13, 11-8 and then beat Rittanya Deolkar 11-5, 12-10, 11-8. Vedika also outplayed Anaisha Dwivedi 11-3, 11-6, 11-3.

Patel pockets five gold to emerge best swimmer

Bombay YMCA’s Heeva Patel, with five golds in the girls’ under-9 section, emerged as best swimmer in the Greater Mumbai Amaetur Aquatic Associatio­n’s lower age group swim meet held at Khar Gymkhana.

Pratyakshv­ir Parmar won four gold medals apart from one silver in the boys’ U-9 section.
