MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started a special drive to clean up narrow lanes between the buildings in the Grant Road area. D ward’s solid waste management (SWM) department has started this drive to clean up the narrow lanes between two buildings.

These lanes are located between cessed buildings. Cessed buildings are old or dilapidated mainly located in the city division of BMC and cleanliness of the lanes between the buildings are primarily the responsibility of the civic body. During this campaign, approximately 1000 house gullies / lanes will be cleaned up by the SWM employees of the D ward in the coming few weeks. Since the lanes are narrow, only one person can enter the lane at a time.

Shrikant Rathod, assistant engineer, SWM, D ward said, “As per the policy, BMC has to clean these lanes. We call them House Gullies and there are dedicated house gully cleaners in all parts of the ward. However, this time we have got all 146 house gully cleaners from the ward together to clean these lanes. We are also creating awareness in these buildings along with the clean-up.”

On a daily average, we collect about five metric tonnes of waste. The special drive will go on till December end.
