BHIWANDI: A 25-year-old man died after the bike that he was riding was hit by a tempo from the back, near Kasheli Bridge in Bhiwandi, on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Himanshu Thale and was a resident of Khardi village at Shahpur.

Around 7pm on Thursday, Thale came to know from his friends that there was a dahi mandal that was forming a pyramid of more than seven tiers.

He was travelling to the mandal towards Bhiwandi on his bike when the incident happened.

The tempo had allegedly run over Thale’s body after it hit him. There was an eye-witness to the incident who had taken down the number plate of the tempo. The tempo driver is absconding.

The eye-witness who did not wish to be named, said, “The accident took place just a few meters ahead of me but it was too dark for me to see the face of the tempo driver.”

He added, “Thale’s bike was hit from behind and he lost control. Instead of stopping, the tempo driver drove his vehicle over his body.”

Thale was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.

An officer from the Narpoli police station said, “We have charged the tempo driver for rash driving and causing death by negligence.”

He also said, “We have got the tempo’s number plate and with the help of the RTO and the traffic police we will track him down. According to our sources, the accused tempo driver is in Thane.”
