KALYAN: The traffic police clamped down against illegally parked vehicles outside Kalyan railway station on Friday.

Vehicles of lawyers, police officers and a local politician were issued an e-challan for illegal parking.

“Kalyan station area is heavily congestion from Kalyan ST depot till the court area. The continuous plying of autos, which are also parked haphazardly, leads to heavy traffic snarls, especially during peak hours. We conducted a major drive against such vehicles on Friday,” said Sukhdev Patil, in charge of Kalyan traffic unit.

“Among 10 to 15 vehicles which were fined through e-challan for parking illegally near the station area, there were vehicles of lawyers, police officers and a local politician who had parked in no-parking zone,” added Patil.

Commuters have been complaining against the haphazard parking of vehicles on station premises.

“The railway station area is filled with commuters, pedestrians, autos and motorists. It needs a dedicated team of traffic police to curb traffic congestion and carry regular drive against illegal parking. However, action is taken after long gaps,” said Manish Jain, 44, a resident of Khadakpada, Kalyan.

“Every day, three lanes of auto queues are formed on the road outside Kalyan railway station. This hardly leaves any space for other motorists to commute. This causes traffic jams and noise pollution, leading to chaos,” said Pranali Shinde, 23, a resident of Rambaug, Kalyan.

The traffic police said it carries out regular drive against illegal parking in the market and station areas in Kalyan regularly.

“The drive will be carried regularly. As the fines are issued through e-challan system, it will help reduce traffic violations,” said Patil.
