NMMC struggles to finish road work before rains

NAVI MUMBAI: With monsoon merely a month or so away, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is struggling to complete the road concretisation work in the city.

The civic body is concretising three major roads – Patni Road (between Airoli and Digha), Mukund Road (Digha), and the stretch between Turbhe police station and Uran Naka (on SionPanvel highway).

The NMMC has claimed that while the work of the first two roads will be completed before the monsoon, the third would take time.

A senior officer from the engineering department said, “We started concretising the 2.5km-long Patni Road with a budget of ₹48Cr last October and we have completed around 99 per cent of the work. We have also developed a foot over bridge near the upcoming Digha railway station and some minor work near the FOB is pending. We will finish the remaining work within a week.”

The concretisation of the 3km-long Mukund Road began around the same time with a budget of around ₹50Cr. The officer said, “The work is now under way and we will complete it by May 31. However, we will not be able to complete the work of the road between Turbhe police station and Uran Naka before the monsoon. Even as we had planned to start working on it just after the monsoon last year, we had to wait a long time to finish the official formalities.”

The Navi Mumbai civic body started concretising the 2.2km road with a budget of ₹48Cr earlier this year and till now they have completed work only of ₹18Cr. The pace of work will be slowed down during monsoon and hence, the road will be ready only in October. “However, as a temporary measure, we will level the road and fill up the potholes so that the residents do not face any problem during the monsoon,” he further said.

Sushila Jadhav, 45, a resident of Sanpada, said, “The roads in other parts of the city have also developed potholes and those will definitely create trouble during the rains. We hope the civic body will repair those stretches before the onset of the monsoon.”
