Thane shows slight increase in CFR

- Ankita G Menon

THANE: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has recorded 113 deaths in the last one week since April 29.

Two weeks after a spike in cases was observed, the number of deaths in the city has increased, as per the state’s record. The city currently has a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 1.42 per cent. This is a slight increase from the 1.35 per cent CFR that was observed towards the end of April.

The CFR is the proportion of people who died from among the number of people who have turned positive in the city. The city had seen a peak in fatalities at two per cent around the last week of March this year. From April 1, the CFR started reducing from 1.78 per cent in the first week to 1.35 per cent in the last week of April.

“As the spike in cases was observed in mid-April, there are chances of an increase in fatalities after a few weeks of such a spike. Such trends are commonly observed. However, Thane continues to have a lower CFR,” said Dr Santosh Kadam, president, IMA, Thane.

This week, the daily number of deaths was below 15. However, on May 4, 31 deaths were recorded. “The weekly growth rate of cases has come down from 1.74 per cent in mid-April to 0.58 per cent now. Similarly, the CFR will also reduce gradually. Some of these are reconciled figures and hence a fluctuation is visible. There is nothing to panic as currently we have around 5,316 beds across the city and around 56 per cent are available including 40 per cent ventilators,” said a senior officer from TMC.
