Vinesh sends apology to WFI

NEW DELHI: Suspended wrestler Vinesh Phogat has sent her apology to the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), which had barred her from competitio­ns on grounds of indiscipli­ne during the Tokyo Olympics.

However, the parent body may still not allow her to compete in the upcoming World Championsh­ip. Vinesh, who had a shock quarter-final defeat in Tokyo, was suspended by the WFI for not staying and training with her Indian teammates and for sporting the name of her personal sponsor on her singlet instead of the official sponsor of the Indian contingent.

The 26-year-old on Friday replied to the notice sent to her by the WFI. “WFI has received the reply and Vinesh has apologised,” a source told PTI.

It has also been learnt that Sonam Malik, who has apologised for her misconduct, may also be barred from appearing in the trials for the World Championsh­ip.

Neeraj has fever, but tests negative for Covid

NEW DELHI: Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has developed high fever over the past few days after returning to India from Tokyo, but has tested negative for Covid-19.

A couple days after returning on Monday, he developed high fever and underwent a Covid-19 test on the advice of doctors.

“He has tested negative for COVID-19. But we have put all his engagement­s on hold for the time being,” a source told PTI. .

World Archery Youth C’Ship: India win 2 gold

WROCLAW, POLAND: India won gold in the compound cadet mixed team event and men team event of the World Archery Youth Championsh­ip in Wroclaw on Saturday.

The mixed team of Priya Gurjar and Kaushal Dalal defeated USA 155-152 in the final.

In the men’s team final, the trio of Sahil Chaudhary, Mihir Nitin Apar and Kushal Dalal defeated the Americans 233-231.

Lahiri recovers to make cut at Wyndham C’ship

GREENSBORO, USA: Anirban Lahiri recovered well towards the end of the second round to ensure weekend action at the Wyndham Championsh­ip here.

Lahiri dropped a double bogey and a bogey on Par-3 12th and Par-4 13th but fought back with birdies on 15th and 17th for a day’s card of 69 after a first round 70. At 4-under, he is now placed T-41st.

Meanwhile, in Kent, Shubhankar Sharma also made the cut at the Cazoo Classic.
