Sindhu, Srikanth enter Korea Open semis

NEW DELHI: In contrastin­g fashion, PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the semi-finals of the $360,000 Korea Open in Suncheon on Friday.

Sindhu, the world No. 7, eased past Thai seventh seed Busanan Ongbamrung­phan 21-10, 21-16 to extend her head-to-head to 17 wins in 18 matches against the world No 11. Sindhu has a tough last-four battle against South Korean world No. 4 An Seyoung, an opponent she has not beaten in three attempts. Earlier, fifthseede­d Srikanth fought hard against local hope Son Wan-ho, winning 21-12, 18-21, 21-12.

Men’s doubles third seeds Satwiksair­aj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost 20-22, 21-18, 20-22 to local players Kang Minhyuk and Seo Seungjae. Women’s doubles top seeds Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy also lost their quarter-final 19-21, 17-21 to Eom Hye Won and Bo Ryeong Kim.

Becker found guilty in bankruptcy trial

LONDON: Tennis great Boris Becker could face a jail sentence after being found guilty on Friday of illicitly moving thousands of dollars from a bank account after he was declared bankrupt.

The German was found to have transferre­d hundreds of thousands of pounds after his June 2017 bankruptcy from his business account to other accounts, including those of his ex-wife Barbara and estranged wife Sharlely “Lilly” Becker.

Panghal storms into Thailand Open final

NEW DELHI: Amit Panghal defeated Vietnam’s Tran van Thao 5-0 to enter the 52kg final of Thailand Open Internatio­nal.

Ananta Chopde and Sumit Kundu also won their semi-final bouts. Chopde defeated Vietnam’s Bui Trong Thai 5-0 in 54kg, while Sumit got the better of Kazakhstan’s Ayatulla Takizhanov in a 75kg bout.

Duration of ISL needs to be longer: AIFF secretary

MUMBAI: All India Football Federation (AIFF) general secretary Kushal Das admitted that the length of Indian Super League needs to be longer.

“We now have the ISL, of course, the duration of ISL needs to be increased. Hopefully going forward next year, we would have a structure where football will be played for six-eight months and at all levels,” Das said during the launch of Internatio­nal Sports Expo here.
