THE POLICE SAID A GROUP OF AT LEAST 10 MEN GANG-RAPED THE WOMAN AND FLED WITH HER WALLET AND CELLPHONE

RANCHI: A 26-year-old techie, who works for a Bengalurubased IT company, was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped in Jharkhand’s Chaibasa area when she was out with a friend, police said on Saturday. Ten unidentified people have been booked on charges of rape and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the matter.

According to the police, the woman was allegedly raped by 9-10 men near the old aerodrome in Chaibasa on Thursday evening when she was out with a friend on a two-wheeler. A group of 10 men stopped them, beat up her friend, and raped the woman at a secluded spot, the woman said in her complaint.

The woman’s friend, however, managed to escape and informed the police.

After committing the crime, the accused left her at the spot and fled with her wallet and mobile phone, an official added. The woman managed to reach home and told her family about the incident after which they filed a police complaint.

“The matter pertains to Mufassil police station limits. Police were informed by the friend who was with the survivor and managed to escape from the place of occurrence. We have registered a case based on the woman’s statement and ensured her proper treatment. We have formed an SIT, led by Sadar sub divisional police officer and Jagannathpur DySP. Some people have also been questioned,” superintendent of police (West Singhbhum), Ashutosh Shekhar, said.

The survivor, who is a resident of Jhinkpani area of the district, is reportedly working from home and is living in a rented accommodation in Chaibasa district headquarters.

“The survivor’s condition is now stable. We are doing technical surveillance besides working on other leads. The SIT is working on all possible angles to crack the case,” said Shekhar.

The incident, meanwhile, triggered political outrage with the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanding chief minister Hemant Soren’s resignation over the incident. “Soren’s government is insensitive towards the incidents of rape that have happened in the state over the last three year,” news agency PTI quotes former chief minister Raghubar Das as saying.

The ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), however, promised stringent action in the case.

“The state government has been taking prompt action in such cases and will do it in the Chaibasa incident as well,” JMM spokesperson Mohan Karmakar said, rejecting the BJP’s allegations as an attempt to “tarnish” Soren’s image.
