Aman captures India’s first gold at U-23 wrestling Worlds

PONTEVEDRA, SPAIN: Freestyle wrestler Aman Sehrawat grabbed India’s first gold medal of the U-23 World Championsh­ip, outplaying Turkey’s Ahmet Duman 12-4 in the 57kg title clash here on Saturday.

Aman scored all his points in the second period while his opponent got his points with a couple of two-pointers in each period. It is Aman’s fourth medal this season, having won a gold in Almaty, silver at Dan Kolov and a bronze at Yasar Dogu.

India signed off with six medals from the event with only nine wrestlers taking the mat. The 21 others in the squad could not compete as their visa applicatio­ns were rejected by the Spanish embassy.

Denmark Open: Lakshya loses in quarter-finals

ODENSE: Commonweal­th Games champion Lakshya Sen suffered a straight-games loss to Japan’s Kodai Naraoka in the men’s singles quarter-final to bring down curtains on India’s campaign at the Denmark Open Super 750 tournament here.

Sen, a 2021 world championsh­ips bronze medallist, lost 17-21, 12-21 to Naraoka, a bronze medallist at the 2018 Youth Olympics, in a lop-sided contest on Friday.

The two have played thrice in the internatio­nal circuit with the Japanese winning twice. Interestin­gly, it was Sen who had defeated him in the 2018 Youth Olympics semi-finals.

Colombia, Spain enter U-17 WC semi-finals

MARGAO: Colombia defeated a nine-member Tanzania 3-0 in the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Saturday.

In the other quarter-final, Spain rallied to beat Japan 2-1. Momoko Tanikawa put Japan ahead with a 66th minute strike, but Vicky Lopez (87’ and 90+3) scored twice to seal the issue in Spain’s favour.

Sakkari wins to secure last WTA Finals spot

GUADALAJAR­A: Fourth seed Maria Sakkari overcame Veronika Kudermetov­a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 to reach the Guadalajar­a Open semi-finals and grab the eighth and final spot at the year-ending WTA Finals.

Sakkari saved 14 of 15 break points to outclass her determined opponent and will join Iga Swiatek, Ons Jabeur, Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, Caroline Garcia, Aryna Sabalenka and Daria Kasatkina at the finale.
