Social worker Sane passes away at 65

THANE: Social worker and politician Sanjeev Sane died on Friday morning in Thane after battling oesophagea­l cancer for over two years.

Sane, 65, was vice-president of Maharashtr­a wing of Swaraj Abhiyan and also contested Lok Sabha elections on Aam Aadmi Party ticket in 2014.

Sane joined the Rashtra Seva Dal in 1976 and participat­ed in agitations against the emergency declared by former prime minister Indira Gandhi. He was also jailed for eight days in Thane jail for the same. He was also the national joint secretary and national vice-president of the Samajwadi Jan Parishad, a political party formed in 1995.

Sane was also an anti-corruption crusader in the city and formed the Thane Citizen Forum to fight against the property tax based on capital value.

Unmesh Bagve, a Thanebased activist, who had worked with Sane for many years said, “Sane was a true leader, always fighting for people and a torchbeare­r of progressiv­e movement in Maharashtr­a.”

He is survived by his wife and a son. His last rites were conducted in Thane on Friday.
