SAN FRANCISCO/WASHINGTON: Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was severely beaten by an assailant who broke into their San Francisco home, and he’s being treated by doctors for injuries, according to people familiar with the matter.

Paul, 82, suffered blunt force injuries, according to two people with knowledge of the investigation. The Associated Press reported that the attack was not random and the assailant specifically targeted the home. Paul Pelosi was “violently assaulted” but was expected to make a full recovery, Nancy Pelosi’s spokesman said.

Nancy Pelosi was not in the residence at the time. Her spokesman, Drew Hammill, said the assailant was in custody and the motivation for the attack was under investigation.

The intruder, David Depape, was searching for the Democratic leader, shouting “Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?” before assaulting Paul Pelosi with a hammer.

That was a chilling echo of the chants during the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol, when rioters trying to stop Joe Biden’s election searched menacingly through the halls for the

House Speaker.

President Joe Biden called Nancy Pelosi to express his support, according to White House spokesperson Karine JeanPierre. The Capitol Police, responsible for protecting Congress, said it was working with the FBI and the San Francisco Police on the investigation.
