JAMMU: Union minister of state Jitendra Singh on Thursday thanked home minister Amit Shah for ensuring the Pahadi community in Jammu and Kashmir is granted the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

During a visit to the Valley in October, Shah said the Pahadi community will get reservation benefits under the ST ambit, in accordance with recommendations of the Justice Sharma Commission.

Shah added that there will be no reduction in ST reservation for Gujjar and Bakerwal communities.

“Thank HM Sh@AmitShah ji for conceding (to) the long pending demand of granting ST status to #Pahari community. This could have been possible only in a government headed by PM Sh@narendramodi ji which has the courage and conviction to transform #JammuAndKashmir,” Singh tweeted. His comment came a day after The Hindu reported that The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has the way for the inclusion of the Pahadi ethnic group in the Scheduled Tribes list of J&K.
