Alcaraz quits in Paris quarters; Djokovic wins

PARIS: World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz retired from his Paris Masters quarter-final against Holger Rune on Friday due to injury while trailing by a set.

Rune won the first 6-3 before Alcaraz quit early in the second set tie-break, having received treatment on his abdominal area at previous changeover.

Rune will face Felix AugerAlias­sime, who stretched his winning run to 16 matches as he defeated Frances Tiafoe 6-1, 6-4 to power into the semi-finals.

The 22-year-old Canadian is attempting to capture a fourth title in as many weeks after victories in Florence, Antwerp and Basel last month.

Earlier, Novak Djokovic, seeking a record-extending seventh Bercy title this week, thrashed Russian Karen Khachanov 6-4, 6-1 to enter the quarter-finals. Djokovic stretched his winning run in individual tournament­s to 18 matches, dating back to his French Open quarter-final loss to Rafael Nadal in May.

Swiatek downs Garcia at WTA Finals; Gauff out

FORT WORTH: World No. 1 Iga Swiatek beat Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-2 to clinch a semi-final spot at the WTA Finals, but Garcia remained in the hunt for a place in the knockout stage.

France’s Garcia can still advance with a victory on Saturday against Daria Kasatkina, who eliminated Coco Gauff from semi-final contention with a 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory over the error-strewn fourth-ranked American.

Poland’s Swiatek saved five of the six break points she faced and broke Garcia four times on the way to a victory that avenged her three-set loss to the French player in the quarter-finals at Warsaw in July.

ISL: Chennaiyin FC edge past East Bengal 1-0

KOLKATA: Chennaiyin FC beat East Bengal 1-0 to notch up their second win over the same opponents this season in the Indian Super League here on Friday.

Vafa Hakhamanes­hi scored the only goal of the match in the 69th minute, not long before he was sent off. Both sides finished with ten men as East Bengal’s Sarthak Golui was also sent off in the 75th minute.

The three points move Chennaiyin FC from sixth to fifth in the ISL table with seven points. They next play Mumbai City FC at home on November 12.

Sachin guides Pirates to win over U Mumba

PUNE: Sachin led a spirited fightback as Patna Pirates registered a 34-31 victory over U Mumba in a Pro Kabaddi League match here on Friday.

U Mumba gained the momentum in the first half, but the Pirates fought back in the second half through raider Sachin’s efforts at the Shree Shivchhatr­apati Sports Complex, Balewadi here. Sachin contribute­d a total of 12 points in the match.

Nishna makes cut at Women’s Asia-Pacific

PATTAYA: Nishna Patel carded one-under 71 to emerge as the lone Indian to make the cut at Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific golf here on Friday.

Patel took her total to one-under for 36 holes to lie tied 17th at the halfway stage at the Siam Country Club.
