At 82, Sharad Pawar does a 2019 repeat, takes break from hospital to address party conclave

MUMBAI: In October 2019, Sharad Pawar was just about to begin addressing a pre-election rally in Satara when the light drizzle transforme­d into a downpour. Undaunted, the Maratha strongman continued his speech in the lashing rain, and even quipped about how the heavens opening up thus was a sign – a blessing for his Nationalis­t Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress, which were fighting the elections jointly against the all-powerful BJP. Within minutes, the video of the speech went viral, with even detractors of Pawar grudgingly admiring his drive and dedication at the age of 79.

Three years later, at 82, the veteran leader who over the years has survived cancer, heart bypass surgery and diabetic foot, did it again. On Thursday, he took a break from Breach Candy hospital, where he was admitted for patches on his lungs, and travelled to Shirdi to address party workers and leaders at the two-day NCP conclave. By day’s end, he was back in his hospital bed. Although travelling to Shirdi was against medical advice, Pawar insisted, and after being put through tests, was certified fit to fly.
