Biden, Xi to meet on sidelines of G20: WH

- Prashant Jha

WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping will hold their first in-person meeting next week in Indonesia’s capital, on the sidelines of the summit of the Group of 20 industrialised countries (G20), the White House said in a statement on Thursday.

The US side hopes to discuss ways to “manage competition responsibly” with China and use the meeting, the first since Biden took office two years, as a platform to determine the “redlines” for the two sides.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, when asked about the upcoming meeting in Bali, Biden recalled his earlier conversations with Xi and said, “I have told him: I am looking for competition, not conflict.

Biden also told reporters that he intends to run for re-election in 2024, a day after one of the best midterm election performances by a Democratic president in four decades, adding that he will consult his wife Jill Biden before making a final decision.

Intends to run in 2024

When asked about how the midterm results will shape his decision on 2024, Biden said, “Our intention is to run again. That’s been our intention, regardless of what the outcome of this election was.”

He said he will announce his decision “early next year”.

Biden was starting a weeklong trip to Egypt and Asia on Thursday to grapple with some of Washington’s thorniest foreign policy issues. He hops from an international climate summit in Egypt on Friday to an Asean meeting and the East Asia Summit in Cambodia on Saturday and Sunday to the annual gathering of the G20 in Indonesia from November 14-16.
