MSRDC unsure whom to blame for hole on flyover

MUMBAI: No one is likely to be held responsible for the fivesquare-metre hole that appeared on the Dindoshi flyover on Tuesday causing a traffic jam on the Western Express Highway that lasted hours.

As the 13-year-old flyover is not under the Defect Liability Period (DLP) any more, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd (MSRDC) officials are clueless about whom to hold responsible for the structural damage.

MSRDC is likely to take around 10 to 15 days to get the damaged portion fixed, so commuters will continue to face traffic problems during this period.

MSRDC joint managing director SM Ramchandani said, “It seems that the part of the flyover got damaged because of the extra burden on it by overloaded vehicles. It is not an unusual incident as the flyover is a bit old. But, there is no danger to the flyover and the damaged portion will be ready after repairs.”

MSRDC officials said they would have to raze that part of the flyover that has the damaged portion. The process is expected to take five to ten days. Concretisation will be done after that, which will take three to five days to dry.

While razing the damaged portion in the middle lane, traffic will be allowed on the other two lanes. However, the southbound side will be closed for three to five days after concretisation.

“As vibrations caused by moving vehicles could damage the concretised part, we need to prevent any traffic movement on the flyover for a few days after the concreting work is done,” said a MSRDC official, who requested anonymity.

Also, no heavy vehicles and two-wheelers will be allowed on the flyover until the work is com pleted. “As movement of heavy vehicles and two-wheelers could affect traffic flow during the raz ing work, we will not allow them on the flyover,” said SF Dalvi, sen ior police inspector of Goregaon traffic unit.
