HIV children to get treated at home
MUMBAI: Sion hospital’s Paediatrics Centre For Excellence for HIV Care will be the first in the country to offer telemedicine services to HIV positive children.
This means they will receive tertiary care within the confines of their homes in rural districts.
On Thursday, mayor Sunil Prabhu inaugurated the renovated centre, which will also offer a day-care thalassemia centre and a learning dis ability clinic. centre is one of the seven such centres recognised by the National Aids Control Organisation with 1,200 children receiving HIV treatment.
“We can provide handson care, support and treatment advice to HIV positive children without having to bring them to our hospitals,” said Dr Mamta Manglani, head of paediatrics department, Sion Hospital.
Speaking on the inauguration, Prabhu said the civic body aims to have a separate budget allocation for treatment of thalassemia children. centre houses television and play areas for children under treatment.
“While we have the best medical facilities, our hospitals miss out on the hospitality quotient. Now we too have a centre that boasts infrastructure facilities at par with a private set up,” said Dr Avinash Supe, dean.
The centre received funding from NACO, alumni of SP Jain Institute, We Care Trust and other organisations.
