After 20-minute chase, cops catch mobile thief

MUMBAI: On Tuesday morning, two police constables spotted a 19-year-old robber attack a man with a knife on the streets of Chembur. They chased him for more than 20 minutes before finally getting hold of him.

The incident occurred around 12.25am in the RCF area when Siddhesh Kamble, a historyshe­eter, stole the mobile phone of Latif Zia Kadri Karjagi and attacked him with a knife.

Constable Subhash Barsingh and Borade were patrolling the area when they heard Karjagi’s cries for help.

But by the time the two constables could reach Kamble, he fled towards Vashi naka. The policemen followed suit and began chasing him on foot. Karjagi, who was slashed by Kamble, also ran after them.

However, the accused ran out of luck as more policemen joined in the chase. “The accused passed the RCF police station as he sprinted towards Vashi Naka. Around the same time, senior inspector Dilip Raut and inspector S Jadhav of the police station were entering the premises in a patrol van. They heard the commotion and they too began chasing Kamble,” said a police officer.

The teenager probably expected the policemen to give up chase, but the episode came to an end when he ran into a police nakabandi put up for dahi handi outside Ryan Internatio­nal School in RCF. A breathless Kamble ran out of steam and was finally caught by the police.

Karjagi told police officers that the teen had attacked him with the knife on the pretext of asking to see his touch screen mobile phone.

A preliminar­y investigat­ion into the incident revealed that the accused has at least five previous cases of theft and robbery registered against him with the Ghatkopar police.

A fresh case of theft was reg istered with the RCF police and Kamble was arrested soon after The police have recovered the knife used in the attack.
