70 STUDENTS IN LURCH AFTER COLLEGE SAYS IT DIDN’T GET FEE
MUMBAI: More than 70 students, who had paid the annual fee for the law course at Nalanda Law College in Borivli have been left in the lurch and might end up losing a year as the college said they did not receive their fees.
The students said they had paid Rs22,000 each before the official admissions began to secure a seat in the college. However, the college refused to give them admission, saying the fees did not reach them.
“In April, I approached the college for admission inquiry, where a woman who called herself Smita Shinde told me that she can secure me a seat if I paid the fees immediately. On payment, she gave a hand written acknowledgement and said that the receipt will be given once college begins,” Boni Rai, one of the students said.
The students were later told that the admissions are full and that their seats were never reserved. On Tuesday, these students, along with members of a political youth wing, approached the college, seeking a refund. Some students have filed a police complaint.
The college management, however, said the person who collected the fees was not authorised to do so and she did not deposit the money in the college’s account.
“She collected the fees without the knowledge of the principal or the management. It is unfortunate that the students were cheated. We, too, are planning to approach the police,” said Ajay Salunkhe, member of the college management. Salunkhe added they do not have the whereabouts of Shinde.
The college has been asked to furnish an explanation, Mumbai university officials said.
