Telangana conducts household survey

- Prasad Nichenametla

HYDERABAD: With apprehensions over the utility of the intensive household survey still on in some quarters, the Telangana government went about the mammoth exercise of profiling every citizen on Tuesday.

The single day survey was to create a fool-proof database of the newly created state’s population where every aspect of a family — wealth, health, income to LPG, electricity connections — is taken note of.

The records would aid in rightful delivery of socio-economic schemes for the poor and proper civic amenities.

“The survey is a super hit and a slap in the face for people who raised false doubts over the intention,” said chief minister K Chandrasekhara Rao on Tuesday evening, even as reports poured in that scores of households across the state remained unsurveyed.

Rao assured that everyone would be approached and if need be the survey would be extended. Rao wants to use the data, to be made available in 15 days, for proper implementation of programmes, “without a paisa of pilferage.”

Even then some families refused to participate in the survey and a large number like of Krishna Mohan from Rajahmundry chose not to furnish all the details.

The survey also went to notice of the union home ministry, which on Tuesday reiterated that they are seized of the matter and are keeping a close eye on the situation. “Appropriate intervention will be made by the home ministry at an appropriate time, if necessary,” a senior official said.

The first CM of Telangana came up with the idea when it was revealed that the ration (PDS) cards outnumbered the total number of families in the state by about seven lakhs.
