MUMBAI: A 27-year-old man allegedly raped a 90-year-old woman after tying her up at her room in Chembur on Thursday. It was only after the elderly woman pretended to be dead that the man ran away. The woman, whom doctors have said is in extreme shock, has been admitted to hospital.

The Tilak Nagar police said Prabhu Nadar, a labourer, had consumed alcohol with two of his friends on Wednesday night. “Nadar who was heavily drunk went off to sleep on the road,” said Bhagwat Sonawane, senior inspector, Tilak Nagar police station. In case of an emergency, senior citizens can call the Elderline at 1090

When Nadar woke up, he decided to go to the elderly woman’s room. He was acquainted with her grandson. The woman’s two sons live in the rooms next to hers.

“The incident occurred around 2.30am. Nadar found the door to the woman’s room open, so he went inside, tied her

up and raped her,” Sonawane said. The woman’s grandson said, “She is in a bad state following the incident. The man even bit her on her neck. He had locked the doors of our rooms from outside before entering her room.”

After the woman pretended to be dead, Nadar panicked and while escaping banged on the doors of the other rooms. “After sometime my grandmother managed to come to my room. I was shocked to see her in that condition. My grandmother comes to our room for lunch and dinner and goes back to her room to sleep. She has been doing this for the past 15 years and we never imagined anything like this could ever happen,” the grandson said.

The police were informed and Nadar was found in an inebriated condition in the vicinity following which he was arrested. Nadar has been booked under Indian penal Code (IPC) section 376 (rape) and is currently in judicial custody.
