MUMBAI: After relatives of 39-year-old Santosh Shrivastava, who died at a Juhu hospital, alleged medical negligence, a forensic medical examination was conducted on Monday. A team of two doctors from Cooper Hospital in Juhu carried out the post-mortem.

“We have collected the viscera and blood samples for further investigation to ascertain whether it was caused owing to an overdose of anaesthesia. Things will be clearer after we receive the chemical analysis report,” said the doctor from the forensic department.

Shrivastava, who worked as the vice-president in Kotak Securities, had undergone a fistula surgery on Saturday. While doctors had told his relatives that the surgery “was safe”, within hours of the surgery, Shrivastava’s health began to deteriorate, leading to his death.

Shrivastava’s relatives had said that doctors at the hospital did not mention the type of anaesthesia they would administer to him. “After his condition worsened, we inquired with other doctors only to find that in such cases, general anaesthesia is not preferred,” a relative had said.

Shrivastava’s family has submitted a written complaint to the DN Nagar police station alleging that doctor’s negligence caused his death.

“The statement has been recorded and the viscera samples have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Kalina for chemical analysis. Other medical reports will be sent to JJ Hospital in Byculla, where a panel of the expert will analyse the report,” said Rajendra Chavan, senior inspector at DN Nagar police station, adding, “As of now, no case has been registered against anyone.”

The hospital, however, denied that there was any negligence on its part. A spokesperson of the hospital said, “It was a sudden cardiac event, which is known to happen in such surgeries. We demanded an autopsy, as we are also keen to understand the reason for his death.”
