Hema’s estranged husband attends her funeral with police escort

AS THE FUNERAL PROGRESSED, CHINTAN BEGAN TO CRY PROFUSELY AND WAS CONSOLED BY HIS FATHER

MUMBAI: Hema Upadhyay’s funeral was held at a Santacruz crematoriu­m on Monday.

Over 100 relatives and friends of the Upadhyays were at the funeral, where her brother Manish performed the final rites.

Also present was Hema’s estranged husband Chintan, who attended the funeral with a police escort. Chintan arrived at the crematoriu­m at 5.45 pm, 10 minutes after the ambulance carrying Hema’s body.

Wearing a brown shirt, he walked in with a constable at each side and walked silently towards the pyre as journalist­s clamoured for a quote.

Standing with folded hands next to his father Vidhyasaga­r brother began performing the funeral rites, as did most of Hema’s friends. Hema’s mother could not attend the funeral, according to a friend.

As the funeral progressed Chintan began to cry profusely and was consoled by his father With the pyre still burning, the police escorted Chintan back to the station, where they have been questionin­g him for two days. In addition to the Kandivli police, the Mumbai crime branch also ques tioned him for at least six hours said a source at the crime branch
