-

interest litigation filed by Thane-based activist Dr Mahesh Bedekar complaining about lack of compliance with rules and regulations in organising festivals such as Ganeshotsav, Navratri and dahi handi in the neighbouring Thane, and lack of action on part of the authorities, even if complaints are made about the violations.

Acting on the PIL, the court had directed assistant commissioners of police (ACPS) across all municipal corporations authorised to take action under Noise Pollution Rules, 2000 to remain present in court. The court had summoned them after noticing that despite repeated orders, no offences for breach of noise pollution rules were registered within limits of several municipal corporations.

In Mumbai, 14 offences have been registered for breach of noise pollution rules.

THE DIRECTIVE CAME AFTER GOVT PLEADER SAID THE NOISE LEVELS AT MANY PLACES LIKE PUNE AND NASHIK COULD NOT BE RECORDED
