MUMBAI: A 22-year-old student of mechanical engineering was killed on New Year’s Eve night by his cousin over a trivial issue. The police said the accused was under the influence of alcohol and in a fit of rage he picked up a knife from the kitchen and stabbed his cousin in the chest. The MIDC police have arrested the accused, Shankar Singh Mehra, 27, on the charge of murder.

Shankar, who works with a hotel, lives in the Maheshwari Nagar locality of MIDC, Andheri (East) along with his cousin Kamal Singh Mehra and Kamal’s parents in the same house. Kamal was a third year mechanical engineering student from a college in Navi Mumbai.

According to the police, the incident took place around 11pm when the accused had gone out with his friends for a New Year party and returned home in an inebriated state.

The accused rang the doorbell several times as the family members did not open the door when he rang the first time. Kamal opened the door and an argument started between them, said a police officer.

“Shankar got angry when Kamal asked him why he had come home so drunk. Shankar pushed Kamal and two started fighting. In a fit of rage, Shankar picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed Kamal in his chest,” said senior inspector RB Mandge from the MIDC police station.

Other family members took Kamal to a nearby hospital but he was declared dead before admission. Shankar fled from the spot after the incident, Mandge said.

The MIDC police was informed about the incident. “We managed to catch Shankar from the locality in the morning and he was arrested under the charge of murder,” Mandge said.
